A History of Golf in the Land of the Pharaohs

Vintage Cairo Golf Postcard

The Timeless Allure of Desert Fairways

The concept of striking a golf ball under the watchful gaze of the Pharaohs sounds like a fever dream of modern luxury travel. However, as the vintage aesthetics of the above postcard image suggest, golf in Egypt is steeped in over a century of high-society tradition. Long before contemporary mega-resorts carved green oases into the North African desert, adventurous travelers and colonial elite were adapting the royal and ancient game to the stark beauty of the Giza Plateau.

The Early Days: Sand, Khaki, and Caddies

Golf made its official entry into Egypt during the late Victorian era, heavily driven by British colonial presence and the rise of international luxury tourism. The cornerstone of this heritage was laid in 1899 with the opening of the legendary Mena House Golf Course. Located mere steps from the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, this landmark course initially offered a playing experience completely alien to modern players.

For its first 18 years, the course had no grass at all. Early golfers played their rounds directly on the desert sand and scrub. Putts were made on browns (tightly packed sand mixed with oil) rather than greens, and players relied heavily on local caddies to carry heavy leather bags across shifting dunes. It was not until 1917 that the legendary terrain was redesigned and blanketed in lush green grass, transforming it into a world-famous hunting ground for kings, international diplomats, and Hollywood elite.

Driving into the Present: Cairo’s Pyramid-View Courses

Today, Egypt has transformed into a premier global golf destination, boasting championship-level courses that blend modern design with ancient views. While the historic Mena House Golf Course remains the ultimate bucket-list destination for a quick, scenic 9-hole round, Cairo features several other spectacular courses where you can keep your eye on the ball — and the Pyramids.
